Fiddle Knits Designs

If you follow my personal blog here you will undoubtedly see me talk about knitting. This is my profession, but it is also a huge part of my life. I began this blog to freely discuss my daily life without it interfering with my business, however, I don’t intend to keep knitting content completely out of my personal blog. It would really be impossible considering how much of my waking hours are spent dealing with some aspect of knitwear design. So, if you’re interested in Fiddle Knits Designs, or perhaps just wondering what the heck I’m referring to, then you’re in the right place.

I began Fiddle Knits Design in late 2008. I had developed a love of knitting somewhere around age 21, but I’d had to put it on hold while I worked on my degree since studies left me barely enough extra time to breathe. As soon as I possibly could I picked up my knitting needles once again. I tried to follow patterns. I really did. But it was all in vain. I was never happy with the outcome. This is not to say the patterns were poorly written, or even that I was inept at reading them. No, it just didn’t give me the same satisfaction as I got from figuring it out on my own. (My boyfriend recently told me I like to reinvent the wheel every time…) Once I realized this and came to terms with it I began creating patterns to share on Ravelry. The first several were free. I was curious to see if anyone would like them enough to download. To my excitement people didn’t just download them, they started making my designs! I was in shock! I’d log into Ravelry every 30 seconds to see if another project had been added. After about 6 months of doing this I decided I would try another experiment and see if I could sell anything. I uploaded a few patterns for sale. Shortly thereafter I was contacted by Shannon Okey who was then the editor for Yarn Forward Magazine, a UK based knitting publication. She sent me a message through Ravelry complimenting the designs I had uploaded there and letting me know that if I was ever interested in submitting to a publication Yarn Forward was accepting design proposals. Well now, it just so happened that at that moment I was working on a new ankle sock design (June Apple). I finished up the sample and sent Shannon a few photos and a description. She said yes (and I did a jig around the house) and so it was that I was accepted into a publication for the first time. From here I decided I would just go for it and I dove right in [above my head] and hoped I could swim. Luckily, so far, it seems that I can manage to stay afloat.
